Part 2: How the REBUILD System Tackles Short-Term Soft Tissue Injuries
In Part 1 of this series, we explored the Elevate philosophy on soft tissue injuries: why they occur, how stress and capacity interact, and why traditional rehab approaches often fall short. In this second instalment, we’ll take you inside the REBUILD system and show how we apply that philosophy in practice.
The REBUILD system isn’t a collection of random exercises – it’s a structured framework designed to progressively restore physical capacity, appropriately manage tissue stress, and prepare athletes for the true demands of sport.
The REBUILD framework
Every REBUILD programme is built around three integrated components:
✅ Loading
✅ Resilience
✅ Fast > Fit
Together, these ensure that no key quality is left undeveloped and that athletes are prepared not just to return, but to stay available.

Loading: Rebuilding force tolerance
Loading forms the backbone of our rehab process. Rather than avoiding stress, we progressively expose tissues to it in a controlled and targeted way. Our loading system consists of five key elements:
- Joint function – restoring range of motion and movement quality
- Compound lifts – exposing tissues to high-force, multi-joint demands
- Isolation lifts – targeting specific injured structures/tissues
- Accessory lifts – supporting synergists and reducing compensations
- Isometrics – developing force production across different timeframes
Importantly, these are progressed across six phases to ensure that force exposure matches tissue healing and adaptation.
Our isometric stream progresses through yielding, ramping, pushing and, during the latter stages, catching contractions. This series of progression has been designed to improve rate of force development, not just peak force production capabilities.
A secondary consideration for our isometric stream is progressively exposing athletes to muscle contractions that involve increasingly rapid changes in tension. The concept of ‘jerk’ i.e. the rate of change of acceleration, is being increasingly considered within the context of soft tissue injuries. In the early phases of rehab, we use yielding and ramping isometrics as they involve relatively low jerk for the muscle tendon unit, whereas pushes and catches during the later stages allow us to explore higher levels of tissue-specific jerk. This helps to bridge the gap ahead of returning to high jerk actions associated with playing sport such as landing and decelerating.
Resilience: Addressing the ‘Culprits’ rather than the ‘Victims’?
Whenever a soft tissue injury occurs it’s natural to assume that deficits within the injured muscle are to blame. Similarly, when rehabbing we often rely on injured-tissue-specific strength markers to guide progress and settle our nerves that the athlete isn’t going to break-down again.
However, we’ve seen it enough times where an athlete comes in with a history of hamstring strains and yet on testing their hamstrings are actually pretty strong, so what is happening?
Weaknesses in other muscles and/or deficient movement strategies can place excessive stress on the site that keeps getting injured. We believe effective rehab should look beyond which muscle is injured and try and address the system as a whole.
Our Resilience training addresses this through targeted work for key supporting structures:
- Tri-planar trunk control to improve force distribution and running mechanics
- Shank stability in calf rehab to improve force transfer through the foot and ankle
- Anterior knee control in quad rehab to restore confidence and coordination in deep flexion
- Posterior knee control in hamstring rehab to improve posterior chain integration
This work ensures the injured tissue isn’t forced to compensate for deficits elsewhere, reducing re-injury risk when intensity increases.

Fast > Fit: Bridging the gap to sport
One of the most common failures in rehab is managing the jump from gym-based work to running. Our Fast > Fit stream has been specifically designed to help bridge that gap. Fast > Fit consists of five components:
- 3D pelvis & bulletproof hips – accessing and controlling key athletic positions
- Prep with purpose – isolating and rehearsing technical movement patterns
- Power & prime – jumping and plyometrics to develop power and reactivity
- Speed change & sprint speed – progressive acceleration, deceleration and running exposure
- Conditioning – building fatigue resistance in sport-specific contexts
As we progress through the various levels of each of these components, we ensure that athletes are exposed to increasing levels of movement velocity, ground reaction force, task complexity and, eventually, fatigue.

By reverse-engineering our exercise streams from the demands of our high-intensity on-field actions we are able to provide exercises within the earliest stages of rehab that seek to develop the physical capacities and coordination required to execute those actions, rather than just relying on strength training alone.eel “strong” in generic tests.
The 6-step progression system
REBUILD programmes are structured into three stages, each containing two phases, for six steps in total:
- Return to loading
- Return to jumping
- Return to running
- Return to change of direction
- Return to speed and agility
- Return to game-speed & game-sim conditioning
Progression is governed by exit criteria, not time. Athletes earn the right to move forward by demonstrating capacity, competency and tolerance – ensuring no gaps are left exposed.
A week in the life of a REBUILD rehabber
A typical REBUILD week for our short-term soft tissue injury programmes still emphasises a considered balance between stress and recovery. On our key training days we combine Loading and Fast > Fit sessions to condense stress and provide dedicated days for recovery. This structure helps to avoid fatigue accumulation and offers a schedule that can be managed around work, school and home-life for non-professional athletes.

High-intensity on-feet work is always prioritised before gym loading, reducing injury risk associated with performing fast actions in a fatigued state.
Why REBUILD Works
REBUILD works because it respects both sides of the injury equation:
- It progressively exposes athletes to the stresses they will experience when playing their sport
- It systematically rebuilds the capacity required to tolerate those stresses
By addressing strength, power, speed, coordination and fatigue resistance, we don’t just return athletes to play – we prepare them to perform.
Soft tissue injuries don’t have to be a recurring story. With the right philosophy and a structured system, they can become a temporary interruption rather than a defining feature of an athlete’s career.
